Entrevista a Minute Taker

Hoy en Atroz con Leche estamos muy orgullosos de traeros una interesante entrevista con uno de los artistas más especiales e inquietos que podemos encontrar actualmente dentro del panorama musical. El es  Minute Taker , y del que ya os hablamos  largo y tendido en este articulo. Espero que disfrutéis de esta pequeña charla que nos ha dado la oportunidad de conocer más en profundidad a este maravilloso artista.

+ ¿Cómo surgió Minute Taker? ¿qué queda del Ben McGarvey de tu primer disco?

Lancé mi primer álbum «Too Busy Framing» en 2008 con mi propio nombre, pero pronto me di cuenta de que no me gustaba usarlo. Me cansé de tener que decírselo a la gente (la gente seguía llamándome «Ben McCarthey» y «Mugabe», ¡jaja!) Y siempre creo que los nombres de las bandas son más fáciles de recordar que los nombres de las personas porque escuchamos los nombres de muchas personas en día a día, así que decidí lanzar mi segundo álbum bajo un seudónimo. Me tomó bastante tiempo encontrar un nombre que me gustara y que no estuviera pillado. En ese momento trabajaba como “Minute Taker” en una oficina, tomando minutas para las reuniones, y me pareció que podía ser un nombre artístico genial. ¡Me gustó la forma en que sonaba un poco mundano y de otro mundo al mismo tiempo! Solía ​​soñar despierto mucho en el trabajo, pensando en ideas para canciones, y tenía visiones de un señor del tiempo todopoderoso que bajaba de las nubes para robar los minutos, ¡jaja! Así que el nombre se quedó y lo he usado desde entonces.

 

 

+ How did Minute Taker come about? And what remains of the Ben McGarvey from

your first album?

I released my first album ‘Too Busy Framing’ in 2008 under my own name but I soon realised I didn’t like using it.  I got sick of having to spell it out to people (people kept calling me ‘Ben McCarthey” and “Mugabe”, haha!)  And I always think that band names are easier to remember than people’s names because we hear so many people’s names in day to day life, so I decided to release my second album under a pseudonym.  It took me quite a while to find a name I liked that wasn’t already taken.  I was working as a Minute Taker in an office at the time, taking minutes for meetings, and it struck me that it could be a cool artist name. I liked the way it sounded kind of mundane and otherworldly at the same time!  I used to daydream a lot at work, thinking up ideas for songs, and I had visions of an almighty timelord reaching down from the clouds to steal the minutes, haha! So the name stuck and I’ve used it ever since.

 

+ ¿Qué significa para ti independencia y gestionar todo el trabajo a través de Octagonal Records? (Octagonal Records es su propia discográfica. Todo el trabajo de Minute Taker es autoeditado).

Me encanta que vivamos en una época en la que es posible tener una carrera de éxito como artista independiente. Internet permite hacer eso. Es mucho trabajo organizar todos los diferentes aspectos de la música, la promoción, las ilustraciones, los videos, la fabricación, los sitios web, las redes sociales, etc., pero es muy enriquecedor poder tener un control total sobre mi trabajo y cómo se presenta. En el pasado dependíamos mucho de que un sello discográfico nos eligiera, así que me siento muy privilegiado de estar haciendo esto en una época en la que básicamente puedo hacer que suceda por mí mismo y hacerme cargo de todos los aspectos de mi carrera.

+ What independence means to you and managing all the work through Octagonal

Records?

I love that we live in an age where it’s possible to make a successful career as an independent artist.  The internet allows us to do that.  It’s a lot of work to arrange all the different aspects of the music, promotion, artwork, videos, manufacturing, websites, social media, etc, but it’s very empowering to be able to have full control over my work and how it’s presented.  In the past we were very reliant on being picked up by a record label so I feel very privileged to be doing this in an age where I can basically make it happen for myself and take charge of all aspects of my career.

 

+ ¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre tu nuevo trabajo «Wolf Hours»?

Bueno, «Wolf Hours» es un álbum de synth-pop en el que he estado trabajando durante algunos años. Está inspirado en mucha de mi música favorita de los 80, como Eurythmics, Kate Bush, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, etc. También lo he desarrollado como un espectáculo audiovisual, trabajando con varios directores de video y un artista de animación. El programa explora el mundo interior de los gays en diferentes momentos durante el último siglo. Lo presenté en concierto en varios lugares en Inglaterra el año pasado y estaba buscando seguir de gira, pero luego ocurrió el covid, así que no estoy seguro de poder hacerlo ahora. Sin embargo, he estado lanzando algunas partes del programa como vídeos musicales para los sencillos del álbum, incluido mi último lanzamiento, «The Darkest Summer«, que se desarrolla en una playa en 1989.

+ What can you tell us about your new work “Wolf’s Hours” ?

Well ‘Wolf Hours’ is a synth-pop album I’ve been working on for a few years now.  It’s inspired by lots of my favourite music from the 80s like Eurythmics, Kate Bush, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, etc.  I also developed it into an audiovisual show, working with various video directors and an animation artist.  The show explores the inner world’s of gay men at different points in time over the last century.  I took it to several venues in England last year and was looking to tour it further but then covid happened so I’m not sure if I will be able to now.  I have however been releasing some parts of the show as music videos for the album’s singles, including my latest release ‘The Darkest Summer’ which is set on a beach in 1989.

 

+ ¿Cuándo vas a lanzar un nuevo álbum, podrías darnos una fecha?

Espero lanzar «Wolf Hours», el álbum a principios de 2021, si todo va bien.

 

+ When are you going to release a new album, could you give us a date?

I’m hoping to release ‘Wolf Hours’, the album early in 2021, all being well.

 

+ ¿Cuál es tu forma de componer? ¿Música primero, luego letra y melodía? Cuéntanos un poco más sobre tu método de trabajo.

Tiendo a escribir la música primero. Las canciones suelen aparecer en mi cabeza cuando menos las espero, a veces como bandas sonoras de mis sueños. ¡Es tan extraño! Me despierto con una canción en mi cabeza. Luego lo canto en la grabadora de mi teléfono para no olvidarlo. Hay palabras, pero por lo general no tienen sentido, así que hago una demostración de la canción con las palabras galimatías que naturalmente acompañan a la melodía, y luego trabajo en escribir la letra adecuada de la canción, a menudo tratando de hacer coincidir los sonidos de las vocales de las palabras que cantaba en el sueño. Cuando hago una demostración de la canción, empiezo a construir las diferentes capas de voces e instrumentos y gradualmente la canción completa comienza a tomar forma. Es un proceso realmente emocionante. Sin embargo, la parte difícil es acabarlas. Tiendo a escribir alrededor del 90% de la canción en los primeros días y luego paso años en ese último 10% … jaja.

 

+ What is your way of composing? Music first, then lyrics and melody? Tell us a little more about your working method.

I tend to write the music first.  The songs often pop into my head when I’m least expecting them, sometimes as the soundtracks to my dreams.  It’s so strange!  I wake up with a song in my head.  I then sing it into the recorder on my phone so I don’t forget it.  There’s words but they don’t usually make sense so I demo the song with the gibberish words that naturally come along with the melody, and then I work on writing proper lyrics to the song, often trying to closely match the vowel sounds of the words I was singing.  When I demo the song I start building up the different layers of vocals and instruments and gradually the full song starts taking form.  It’s a really exciting process.  The hard part is finishing them though.  I tend to write about 90% of the song in the first couple of days and then spend years on that last 10%… haha.

 

+ ¿A qué le das más importancia: letra o música?

Siempre es un acto de equilibrio porque a menudo lo que me gustaría decir no encaja del todo con la melodía. Se vuelve un poco complicado encontrar formas de transmitir el significado dentro de los límites de las melodías. Lo más importante es que la música y la letra trabajen juntas como un todo y que transmitan una emoción. A menudo, las palabras y frases más simples sirven para la canción mejor que encuentro. Pero si alguna vez hay que tomar una decisión en torno a priorizar la música o las letras, tenderé a priorizar la música.

+ What do you give more importance to: lyrics or music?

It’s always a bit of a balancing act because often the exact thing I’d like to say doesn’t quite fit with the melody.  It becomes a bit of a puzzle to find ways to get across the meaning in the confines of the melodies.  The most important thing is that the music and lyrics work together as a whole and that they convey an emotion.  Often simpler words and phrases serve the song best I find.  But if ever there is a decision to be made around prioritising the music or the lyrics I would tend to prioritise the music.

 

+ ¿Consideras que declararte artista gay te beneficia o perjudica?

Pienso que ambas. Me ayuda a conectarme con el público gay, creo que es realmente importante. Mientras crecía, siempre quise encontrar música que reflejara las experiencias de las personas homosexuales en la música, pero descubrí que no había muchos artistas abiertamente homosexuales, e incluso los que sí lo eran no parecían ir realmente allí con sus letras. Siempre me molestó cuando los artistas homosexuales tenían sus videos enfocados en los asuntos amorosos de las personas heterosexuales, pero ahora yo mismo soy un artista, entiendo por qué lo hacen, y especialmente en ese entonces cuando las actitudes hacia la homosexualidad no eran de ninguna manera tan liberales como son hoy. Al final del día, el mundo es predominantemente heterosexual y la gente quiere verse a sí misma en el arte. Eso es lo que más les interesa y con eso se relacionan.

No creo que realmente me haga ningún favor al retratar personajes homosexuales en mis videos, pero creo que es importante hacerlo, y hacerlo de manera muy natural y sin clichés. No solo para que los homosexuales tengan arte con el que puedan identificarse, sino también porque necesitamos seguir avanzando hacia un lugar en la sociedad donde los homosexuales o los heterosexuales ya no sean un problema; se trata solo de personas individuales.

Y probablemente hay algunas personas que rechazan mi música cuando descubren que soy gay pero, honestamente, no quiero compartir mi música con gente así de todos modos.

+ Do you consider that declaring yourself a gay artist benefits or damages you?

I think both.  It helps me to connect with gay audiences I think which is really important.  Growing up I always wanted to find music that reflected gay people’s experiences in music but I found that there wasn’t many openly gay artists at all, and even the ones that were didn’t seem to really go there with their lyrics.  It always annoyed me when gay artists would have their videos focused around straight people’s love affairs, but now I’m an artist myself I do understand why they do that, and especially back then when attitudes towards homosexuality weren’t by any means as liberal as they are today.  At the end of the day the world is predominantly straight and people want to see themselves in art.  That’s what interests them most and that’s what they relate to.

 

I don’t think I really do myself any favours by portraying gay characters in my videos but I think it’s important to do that, and to do that in a very natural, non-cliche way.  Not just so that gay people have art they can relate to, but also because we need to continue to move towards a place in society where gay or straight isn’t even an issue anymore; it’s just about the individual people.

 

And there are probably some people who dismiss my music when they find out that I’m gay but, in all honestly, I don’t want to share my music with people like that anyway.

 

+ ¿Quiénes son los artistas que más han influido en tu música?

Crecí escuchando a cantautores imaginativos como Kate Bush, David Bowie, Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Bat for Lashes y también mucha música synth-pop de los 80 de Pet Shop Boys, Tina Turner, Erasure, Alison Moyet, etc. Últimamente me encuentro escuchando cada vez más música instrumental sintetizada como Vangelis, John Carpenter y Jean Michel-Jarre, e incluso la música moderna que escucho tiende a tener una orientación bastante retro. Me metí en synthwave a lo grande en los últimos años, con artistas como The Midnight y Timecop1983. Amo la música que evoca la nostalgia de los 80 y mi propia música definitivamente se ha dirigido en esa dirección durante los últimos años.

+ Who are the artists who have most influenced your music?

I grew up listening to imaginate singer-songwriters like Kate Bush, David Bowie, Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Bat for Lashes and also a lot of 80s synth-pop music by Pet Shop Boys, Tina Turner, Erasure, Alison Moyet, etc.  Lately I find myself increasingly listening to instrumental synth music like Vangelis, John Carpenter and Jean Michel-Jarre, and even the modern music I listen to tends to be quite retro-orientated.  I got into synthwave in a big way over the past couple of years, with artists like The Midnight and Timecop1983.  I love music that evokes 80s nostalgia and my own music has definitely been heading in that direction over the past couple of years.

+ ¿Cuál fue el primer álbum que compraste?

Creo que podría haber sido «Music Box» de Mariah Carey en 1993. De hecho, todavía me encanta ese álbum.

+ What was the first album you bought?

I think it might have been Mariah Carey’s ‘Music Box’ back in 1993. I still love that album actually.

+ ¿A partir de qué momento empezaste a amar la música y a considerarla como un medio de expresión y forma de vida?

Empecé a tocar nuestro viejo piano familiar del sótano cuando tenía unos 12 años. No sabía lo que estaba haciendo, por supuesto, pero prácticamente comencé a escribir pequeñas canciones de inmediato y desde entonces me enganché. Unos años más tarde entré en la producción musical y me encantó cómo podía superponer sonidos y voces y crear un pequeño mundo de canciones en el que desaparecer. ¡Mi vida ha girado en torno a hacer canciones desde entonces!

 

+ From what moment did you start to love music and consider it as a means of

expression and way of life.

I started playing our old battered family piano, which was down in our basement, when I was about 12 years old.  I didn’t know what I was doing of course but I pretty much started writing little songs straight away and from then on I was hooked!  A few years later I got into music production and I loved how I could layer sounds and vocals and create a little song world to disappear into.  My life has pretty much revolved around making songs since then!

 

+ ¿Qué canción te hace llorar?

«Take a Bow» de Madonna es uno que me viene a la mente. También «Putting the Damage On» de Tori Amos y «Moments of Pleasure» de Kate Bush. Muchas de the Carpenters también, como » Rainy Days and Mondays » y » For All We Know «. En cualquier caso lloro con bastante facilidad, honestamente.

 

+ What song makes you cry?

‘Take a Bow’ by Madonna is one that springs to mind.  Also ‘Putting the Damage On’ by Tori Amos and ‘Moments of Pleasure’ by Kate Bush.  A lot by the Carpenters too, like ‘Rainy Days and Mondays’ and ‘For All We Know’.  I cry pretty easily though to be fair, haha.

 

+ ¿Para componer prefieres la luz del día o te sientes más cómodo por la noche?

Soy una persona muy nocturna. Siempre me he encontrado despierto hasta altas horas de la madrugada y luego durmiendo por las mañanas. Simplemente parece ser mi ritmo natural. Tiendo a hacer mucho trabajo por la noche. El mundo es más sereno y hay menos distracciones. También me encanta pasear a mis perros por las calles de mi ciudad por la noche, escuchar demos de nuevas canciones para tener más ideas. En todas partes se ve realmente hermoso a la luz de la luna y puedo ver el valle con todas las farolas y casas en las colinas brillando en la niebla.

 

+ To compose you prefer daylight or feel more comfortable at night

I am very much a night person. I’ve always found myself staying up late into the early hours and then sleeping through the mornings. It just seems to be my natural rhythm. I do tend to get lots of work done at nighttime. The world is more serene and there are less distractions. I love walking my dogs round the streets of my town at night too, listening to demos of new songs to get more ideas. Everywhere looks really beautiful in the moonlight and I can see right across the valley with all the streetlights and houses on the hills twinkling in the mist.

 

+ ¿Sigues de cerca la música que se hace en España? ¿Hay algún grupo / artista que te guste?

Me temo que no sigo mucho la música española.

 

+ Do you follow closely the music that is made in Spain? Is there any group / artist that you like?

I don’t really know much Spanish music I’m afraid.

 

+ ¿Planeas hacer un show en vivo en nuestro país?

Me encantaría hacerlo en algún momento en el futuro. ¡Quién sabe! :)

 

+ Do you plan to do a live show in our country?

I’d love to at some point in the future.  Who knows! :)

 

+ Y finalmente ¿a qué aspiras en la música?

Mi objetivo siempre ha sido simplemente hacer mis discos y compartirlos con la gente. Eso es lo que me encanta hacer y espero seguir formando audiencia y escribiendo canciones que conecten con la gente. De eso se trata realmente para mí.

 

+ And finally what do you aspire to in music?

My aim has always been just to make my records and share them with people.  That’s what I love to do and I hope to keep building my audience and writing songs that connect with people.  That’s really what it’s all about for me.
